about

Difference and Repetition is a four-song EP that started to take shape in early 2020. Around this time, Dramón began with a year-long project to compose a different song a week. Among the songs released that year, two were created by the partnership of Dramón and Muqdisho. And both started similarly: a music file shared from Brazil to Germany. First by Dramón, then by Muqdisho.

The process began almost experimentally, with songs without purpose other than exciting melodies. That’s how they started, but that’s not how they stayed.

This first composition was cut into shorter pieces and recorded on tape loops to be played more abstractly, so to speak. This process of sound deconstruction was done through hours, cutting pieces of music and recording everything analogically on other cassette tapes, increasing the experimental side of these songs due to all the distortion inherent in the medium where they were recorded.

“There is Movement in the Depths” was the first to be done this way. A few months later, the song “Difference and Repetition” was recorded similarly. And that was the end of Dramón and Muqdisho’s sonic collaboration in 2020.

But the project continued.

After some talks over the years, in early 2023, the sound collaboration between Dramón and Muqdisho became a reality again, and two songs were proposed to fill an EP.

This is how “A Dancing Sensation in the Anterior Chamber” and “Over Steep Water Waves” became songs. Both were created using the same formula as the previous songs. A track from São Paulo to Berlin over the internet is cut, split, and re-recorded into tape loops to be played using an 8-track.

The album's name comes from the book “Difference and Repetition” by Gilles Deleuze, which philosophically explores the themes of pure difference and complex repetition. From there, the reference for the songs composed at a distance by Dramón and Muqdisho came.

Visually speaking, the project was built similarly. Other than the sounds, the direction of the collaboration here came from Muqdisho to Dramón. Analog photos were taken in Berlin, and the film rolls were mailed to São Paulo.

Thus, photographic overlays of different places were built using each one’s creativity and exploring other possibilities, in the same way that the music on this album was made and closing the circle of visual and sound collaborations.

about

muqdisho Berlin, Germany

MUQDISHO is harsh. But it is without aggression. It is bleak, but it is without fear. With it, Tofani yields the desire for relatability in favor of a faithful portrait of what it feels like to allow oneself to just free-fall into existence.

In somewhat direct & press-oriented words, MUQDISHO is the bleak, noisy, ambient head of a sound spear solely wielded by Felipe Tofani.
